John Engel – the owner of Mission: Fun & Games in St. Albert – came up with the idea for Game-A-Lot in the late ’90s, while camping with his family near Westlock. He spent about a year mulling over the idea of hosting an event “for the gamers, by the gamers.” John hosted the initial Game-A-Lot in his store in 2000, and it’s been a huge success every year since.
At the time, Mission: Fun & Games and the St. Albert Food Bank were neighbours on McKenney Ave., and in 2001 when the Food Bank approached him about working together in some capacity, John knew exactly how he could help.
Since it’s inception, GameAlot has raised over $10,000 for the St. Albert Food Bank, and thousands of pounds worth of goods. Each year the event has grown, as have the contributions. Because of this growth, GameAlot has come to outgrow its home at Mission: Fun & Games. John tried solutions such as tents setup in front of the store, with mixed success. As a result, this year the committee has had to work hard to find a new home, which has been found in the St. Albert Kinsman Banquet Centre.
With a new home, GameAlot also needed a new charity, as there would no longer be space to store the large numbers of food and dry goods donations received in years past. As such, GameAlot is proud to be supporting the St. Albert Family Resource Centre. This amazing non-profit organization works hard to provide life education and support to families in St. Albert, and we hope they will be a great partner for many years to come!
